Shelvers Way Neighbourhood Watch Shelvers Way Neighbourhood Watch

Did you know that in our area... Dear Neighbour, Following the transfer of responsibility for policing this area from the Metropolitan to the Surrey Police Force, the previous Neighbourhood Watch Scheme effectively ceased to operate. Some time ago a meeting was called for the residents of Shelvers Way to look at the possibilities of a Neighbourhood Watch being re-instituted. The result of that meeting was that a committee was formed and since then the majority of residents in the road have joined the scheme. Subsequently, and by special request, the scheme has been extended to include adjoining roads: Copley Way, Hillview Close, Shelvers Green, Shelvers Spur and Vernon Walk. Our scheme involves: Encouraging a community spirit, being observant, looking after each other’s property, when either are out or away. Liasing with the Police if you see anything suspicious or out of the ordinary. Marking your own valuable items with your Postcode and House number, using ultra violet pens or other marking systems. Obtaining security advice in line with the Association of British Insurers to safeguard your home against burglary. Contributing £2.00 toward the general costs of administering the scheme. Subscriptions already received have covered the cost of placing new Neighbourhood Watch signs to cover your area. Ongoing costs involve printing various newsletters and general notices, the hiring of a hall for the annual general meeting and other minor expenses. It must be stressed that this is a residents’ scheme. Whilst the Surrey Police helped to establish this scheme by addressing public meetings and offering security advice, the onus is on us to make it a success. An effective scheme can reduce the risk of crime and some insurance companies will give discounts to members. We do hope you will be interested in joining many of your neighbours and signing up to this scheme. For those who are on e-mail, we do have the ability to send out urgent warnings and information as they occur. If you do not have this facility, then we have hard copy newsletters similar to the attached which are published from time to time. You will see in this example newsletter, a great deal of information is imparted and feed back requested and it is this flow of information which is the base of our Neighbourhood Watch Scheme and has been found so useful to those who are members. If you would like to know more about our scheme, please contact Mike Fox, or any of the committee members — names and house numbers in Shelvers Way are noted below.
